AWA Community Action Work
Our Community Action Work

The American Women of Amman has always held an annual fundraiser to raise money to support several recognized Jordanian charities, as well as AWA’s own outreach efforts which focus on community development and income generation for people living in rural communities and among overlooked segments of the Jordanian population.
In the past we held a holiday bizarre each year. This bizarre was known as one of the most popular ones in Amman. But, over the years we found that were many bizarre and it was harder and harder to make the funds we needed to help our community action committee fund projects they assisted.
Last year a group of ladies got together and decided to try something new, a family fun day, where everyone in the family could enjoy a day out and we could raise money to help those in need.
With the proceeds from last year the community action committee has been able to add several organizations to our list of groups we support. The committee makes visits to organizations we hear about from friends, neighbors, and other groups here in Jordan. When we visit we listen to their problems and their needs and then assess the legitimacy and need of the organization. We then write up a proposal and present it to the AWA board and vote on the right way to help the people in need. The experience of visiting is indeed one of the most rewarding parts of being an AWA member, and a great way to meet new people and friends.
In recent years, AWA has taken a special interest in the central Badia region in Jordan, initiating a sheep income generation project, upgrading the physical plant at Al Lehun elementary school and renovating a community playground.  Similarly, AWA has “adopted” a group of families living among 40 tents outside of Ma’een, visiting them regularly and providing them with food staples, holiday food baskets, as well as donations of clothing and household articles.
Organizations that we have supported in the last year:

1.    King Hussein Cancer Center
2.    Hope Clinic
3.    National Association for Mentally Handicapped
4.    Jordan Meningitis Foundation
5.    Orthodox Educational Society
6.    Families and Friends Society with Disabilities
7.    Holy Land Institute of the Deaf
8.    White Bed Society
9.    The Jordanian Physiatric Rehabilitation Society
10.    Aqaba S.O.S. Sponsor House
11.    Multiple Sclerosis Society
12.    Jordan Specialized Center for Autism
13.    Ramadan Gift Baskets for the needy (food staples)
14.    Christmas Gift Baskets for the needy (food staples)
15.    Al Hussein Society

Other Organizations AWA has sponsored in the last several years:

1. Ajlun Goat Project
2. Al Netell (Al Badia) Swings for Nursery School
3. American Women in Destitute
4. Anjara Goat Project
5. AUB Alumni Sponsorship

About American Women of Amman (AWA)

The American Women of Amman which was founded in 1963 promotes social relations among its members and the Jordanian community, as well as contributing to welfare activities in Jordan. In 1983 AWA associate membership was extended on a limited basis to women of other nationalities who showed interest in participating in the various activities of the club.  Their participation has added new color to the spectrum of our membership. This unique group of American and International women living in Jordan that meets regularly is neither an American Embassy club, nor a registered Jordanian society, having no national or political ties.

Through the Community Action and Scholarship committee, AWA participates in many ways to support the needy in the Jordanian community.  Annually we provide scholastic support to university students. Members of the CAC also make contact with organizations and communities that are in need of help and support that cannot be provided by government or other NGOs. In the Central Badia, we have contributed in many ways to see that these needy people have clothing, food and acceptable school facilities.  Funding for these projects comes from our Black Iris Festival and other money making events. Last year was the first year of the Black Iris Festival, we generated funds which are entirely (100%) donated back to the community. The Black Iris Festival is a family fun day where the whole family can enjoy themselves, there are charity vendors at the festival as well who can promote their products and make awareness campaigns.
